Cleave & Company Limited recognises its responsibilities to the environment and understands that its procurement activities will have direct and indirect impacts on the environment. The company is committed to managing these impacts in a socially responsible manner.
In order to implement the company’s Environmental Policy on an ongoing day to day basis, the company’s procurement policy states that it will:
- Not use any materials from endangered species in its products. Where there is any possibility of error or doubt it will insist on Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) certificates. In their absence, the company will not proceed with purchase and will substitute the materials in question with either different materials or similar material supplied with CITES Certification.http://www.cites.org
- Only use timber that is either recycled or taken from sustainably managed resources. In the case of hardwood timber, the company will use recycled timber wherever possible. In the case of softwood timber, or in the event that we find it impossible to source recycled hardwood timber to the required specification, we will only purchase timber that is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified http://www.fsc.org
- Purchase precious metals and gemstones from UK suppliers belonging to The Responsible Jewellery Council, whose commitment to responsible ethical, human rights, social and environmental practices in a transparent and accountable manner throughout their business and their supply chain has been confirmed by the RJC membership audit process. http://www.responsiblejewellery.com
- Purchase paper and cardboard products made from recycled material wherever these are available.
Purpose
The policy statement sets out a public commitment from the company to carry out its procurement activities in line with its published Environmental Policy in a manner that is visible, clear and accountable to all its stakeholders, its business partners and the wider community.
Scope
This policy statement applies to every officer and employee of the Company.
Responsibility
The Policy Owner is Alastair Craik, the Director, who carries responsibility to the Board for the implementation and monitoring of the Company’s procurement activities.

Cleave & Company Limited recognises its responsibilities to the environment and understands that its activities in design, manufacture and marketing will have direct and indirect impacts on the environment. The company is committed to managing these impacts in a socially responsible manner.
The company believes in environmental protection and embraces its obligations to conduct business in line with best environmental practice. It is committed to a programme of continuous improvement, the aim of which is to minimise the environmental impact of its business. It also encourages business partners to reduce the environmental impact of their activities.
In operating in line with best environmental practice the Company strives to:-
- Integrate environmental considerations into strategic, operational and procurement decision making
- Identify opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of its working practices by improving efficiency in areas such as energy consumption, paper use, travel, packaging and recycling in line with current regulations and guidelines
- Not use any materials from endangered species in its products.
- Only use timber from sustainably managed resources.
- Purchase precious metals and precious stones from suppliers committed to responsible ethical, human rights, social and environmental practices in a transparent and accountable manner throughout their business and their supply chain.
- Learn from initiatives designed to improve environmental awareness and behaviour.
It will define standards of environmental practice in the form of specific, measurable targets for improvement, where opportunities can be identified in the areas listed above. In particular, these environmental practice objectives are embodied in a company Procurement Policy designed specifically to promote their achievement. These targets and in particular the Procurement Policy will be agreed by the board on an annual basis, and compared with actual performance in an annual board review to ensure working practices are consistent with environmental policy objectives.
