We would like anyone to be able to look at this site and to write to us, whatever they are using to do it. This page sets out what we have done, what we know is imperfect, and how to tell us when something is in your way.
What we have done
- Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, and the item you are on is visibly marked.
- There is a skip link at the top of each page, so you need not go through the menu every time.
- Text contrast against its background meets the AA standard. Where text sits over a photograph or a film, the image carries its own darkening behind the words, so the contrast holds whatever frame is showing.
- Photographs carry descriptions for anyone using a screen reader, and decorative ones are marked as decorative so they are not read aloud pointlessly.
- Headings are real headings, in order, so a page can be navigated by structure rather than by scrolling.
- Nothing flashes, and nothing moves on a loop that cannot be stopped.
- If your device is set to reduce motion, the films do not play. You get a still frame instead, and the site respects that setting without being asked.
- Text can be enlarged to twice its size without anything being cut off or overlapping.
- The site works at the width of a small phone without sideways scrolling.
What is not right yet
Being straightforward about this is more useful than a clean bill of health:
- The films have no captions or transcript. They carry no speech, so nothing is being said that you would miss, but a description of what they show would still be better than nothing and we intend to add one.
- The Royal Warrant device is small. The wording set beneath the arms is hard to read at the size it appears in the header. The same wording is given as plain text in the footer of every page, and read aloud in full by a screen reader.
- Some photographs of pieces would benefit from fuller descriptions than they presently carry.
Telling us about a problem
If something here stopped you doing what you came to do, please tell us: byappointment@cleave.com, or +44 20 7016 1499. Say what you were trying to do and what got in the way, and we will fix it or find you another route to it.
You are always welcome to telephone or write instead of using the site. Every enquiry is answered by a person, and a commission has never needed a web browser.
Where this stands
We have aimed at the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 at level AA. We have not had the site audited independently, so this is our own assessment rather than a certified one, and the shortcomings listed above are ones we know about. If you find others, the paragraph above is how to reach us.
